Mexico – Chapter 49 – Arbol de Tule

We visit the Arbol de Tule (tree of Tule), in the town of Santa Maria del Tule, close to Oaxaco, Mexico. The tree of Tule, has the largest girth of any tree in the world. It is probably 2000 years old.

I read Chapter 49 of the Tao te Ching, translated by Steven Mitchell:

“The Master has no mind of her own.
She works with the mind of the people.”

“She is good to people who are good.
She is also good to people who aren’t good.”

“This is true goodness.”

The tree is 40 meters (131 feet) high. It has a circumference of 42 meters (137 feet), more than any other tree in the world.

“She trusts people who are trustworthy.
She also trusts people who aren’t trustworthy.

This is true trust.”

“The Master’s mind is like space.”

“People don’t understand her.
They look to her and wait.
She treats them like her own children.”
