Climbing up to Santarem

We walked up the steep road to reach Santarem. When the city was held by the Moors in 1147, its fort was thought to be impregnable. Alfonso Henriques, first king of a Portugal, conquered the city after some of his men climbed the walls during the night and opened the gates. We climbed the road on a very hot afternoon and encountered a wonderful fountain. “The Tao is like a well,” Lao tsu said. “Used but never used up.” We were very tired and rested in that place. “It is like the eternal void, filled with infinite possibilities. It is hidden but always present.” When you meditate, you experience the well inside. Thoughts spring forth, you take note of them, and let them go. It goes on and on.
